ADA Signage 101: What are ADA signs and why do they matter?

ADA signage is present in just about every public building in the US. We spend our whole lives surrounded by it in schools, churches, airports, doctor’s offices, restaurants– you name it. Most of us never really give it much thought. It simply exists, telling us where to go in a new place.

Why are ADA signs important?

The passage of the laws outlined in the ADA make sure that public spaces, above all, are safe and accessible for those with disabilities. Before these laws were passed in 1990, no comprehensive laws existed to protect the rights and comfort of Americans with disabilities.

The ADA’s most recent revision in 2010 is a 200+ page document going into great detail about requirements for buildings. Most notably, it explains the way ADA-compliant signs are supposed to look.

These details help readers understand how to make public spaces accessible. Both visual and physical accessibility are crucial to ensure that the estimated 3.4 million Americans with vision impairment can safely find their way.

Do all ADA signs have to look exactly the same?

The guidelines in the 2010 revision of the ADA Standards document give information about accessible, compliant sign design. However, its rules may seem a little strict and visually limiting.

What if your building has its own set of design standards? What can be done to make the ADA signage fit in with the general design concept of the building’s other signage?

ADA signage is required by law, but it doesn’t have to be boring.

The font used on your signs can’t be too ornamental. They must be a certain size and a certain distance away from other visual elements. ADA guidelines only permit certain colors and materials. For example, signs can’t have a glossy, reflective finish– only nonglare, matte materials can be used.

There are lots of design requirements for ADA signage, but you don’t have to sacrifice your company’s design standards to meet them.

Every sign we create is custom-built. Our talented designers are ADA experts so you don’t have to be. Most importantly, we work one-on-one with customers to ensure that the wholesale signs we make fit your vision and your budget.

Evacuation Signs by ADA Signs Wholesale

Evacuation Signs by ADA Signs Wholesale

Evacuation Signs are often included in the ADA Sign specs given to sign shops or building managers by the architect. Sometimes when the evacuation sign specs are received, the sign shop or the building manager, or whoever else may be in charge isn’t quite sure what to do with those evacuation sign drawings. We can help, and we can include it in the wholesale ADA Sign order!

Naturally, we all realize that the evacuation signs are very important. As of this writing (Thursday May 25th, 2017), ff you visit OSHA’s website you will see their guidelines for evacuation procedures. Additionally, Osha’s website has a page with an example evacuation map. If you would like to see the text from the Occupational Safety and Health Standards that pertains to evacuation,  It is currently available here, and it is in this section: 1910.38(c).

Besides OSHA insisting that you have evacuation routes posted, and an evacuation plan in place, don’t you want visitors and employees to easily and safely leave your building in an emergency? The Evacuation Map is clearly not a sign you can afford to skip. So don’t!

What to do with those Evacuation Route specs often included in your ADA sign specs from your architect?  A few things:

Evacuation route signs could save your business from a large number of terrible outcomes, if they are easily visible and properly placed.
Your ADA Signage throughout your business, has a uniform look. People notice the ADA Signage, even if that individual has no obvious need for the ADA features of the sign. ADA Signs stand out and scream, “Look at me! I’m official!” This is the same message your evacuation route signs should send.

In an emergency, the evacuation route signage, the ADA Signage and the Exit signs must be clear.

ADA Signs Wholesale is already covering your ADA Signs, so why not add on your evacuation signs, as well? The only other option is to pay full price for them elsewhere. Skipping the evacuation route signage is never an option.

You’ve heard of the glue, you’ve used it, you know it’s good stuff and you know it’s made right here in the USA. But, did you know that Gorilla Glue is based in Cincinnati, Ohio? Don’t take my word for it, check out the virtual tour on their website.ADA Custom Signage for Glue Warehouse

“The Toughest Glue on Planet Earth”, that’s what we’ve always experienced, seen and heard, when it comes to Gorilla Glue products. We know their glue is mighty tough, but the folks at Gorilla Glue were certainly a joy to work with! Everyone we met was very professional and more than happy to go the extra mile to be certain to meet all of the ADA requirements for signage at their Cincinnati Headquarters. They follow ADA regulations to the letter, not only because it is required by law but, because they are committed to serving ALL of their customers, vendors, employees, visitors and anyone else that comes to their business.

When the folks at Gorilla Glue said, “We want a glue bottle on our ADA signs, but it’s most important that we are in compliance with the ADA?” we knew we were in good company. And why shouldn’t they have their flagship product on their ADA Signs? Their glue is their business! Their adhesives are on shelves in thousands of stores all over the USA and Canada. Their glue is how they have jobs, and how they were able to hire us. Naturally, we were glad to help them create the right design.

Construction Company ADA Sign Project

Building Directory for Construction Company Sign Project

Apartment Construction ADA Sign Project

When an Apartment building is remodeled, there’s always a need for ADA compliant signage. We recently worked alongside Signs PDQ, our sister company, on the  Waverly Apartments project with Mistick Construction .

Mistick Construction’s revamp of The Waverly Apartments required ADA compliant room signs, wayfinding signs, building directory signs and even an exterior Monument Sign. The goal with any sign project is always to make the client happy. For this project, and this client, that meant:

  • Meeting all ADA requirements, to be sure the building would be in compliance.
  • Creating clear signage that would easily guide all visitors to, and through, the building.
  • Meeting the client’s aesthetic needs. Matching colors and matching materials)
  • Providing the finished product on schedule.
  • Offering the finished signs at a price that worked with the budget.
Adjustable Building Directory Sign
Editable Building Directory Sign by Signs PDQ and ADA Signs Wholesale.

The building directory sign for Waverly Apartments, needed to be informative, clear and attractive, but it also needed to be adjustable and resistant to smudges or damage. Additionally, the construction company wanted to plan ahead for changing room locations at a later time.  This meant they needed a sign that was adjustable, or could be “edited”.
Why would a building directory sign need to be adjustable, or edited? In the photo of the directory sign, S4 is clearly the Media Center. However, S4 may, or may not, always be the Media Center. If the building management someday chooses to move the Media Center, or change it’s name, they can simply order new parts for the affected rooms on the sign. If they didn’t have this type of sign, they would need an entirely new sign, whenever they needed to shift rooms.

Rather than purchasing an entirely new sign, if the Waverly changes their room layout, they will most likely only need to change pieces of the sign. The Waverly Apartments Directory Signs have been created to grow and change with the needs of the business.

If you’d like to see more of the sign types offered by ADA Signs Wholesale, we have quite a few! If you don’t see the sign type you want, by all means, just ask us! We design and manufacture virtually any type of sign you can imagine.

If you’d like to see more photos of the Mistick Construction/Waverly Apartments sign project, take a look on the project page over at Signs PDQ.

Outsource Your ADA Sign Project

Outsource ADA Signs Project,or go in-house

Outsource your ADA Sign Project

Choosing to outsource the ADA Signs portion of your sign project can be a great idea for quite a number of reasons. We work with numerous sign shops to help them complete their entire sign project, on time and on budget. In fact, we know they deserve to profit from their sign project and we work diligently to make this happen. Let’s take a look and some specifics regarding the most common reasons to outsource your next ADA sign project:

Outsource your ADA Sign Project

Your sign shop doesn’t have the equipment or space to make hundreds of fully compliant ADA signs, but you have recently been asked to bid on a large sign project that includes ADA compliant signage.

ADA Sign Project Teamwork

What does your sign company do when faced with a large ADA Sign order that you can’t complete alone? The choices are usually:

 #1 outsourcing ada sign projects

Bow out of the bidding process gracefully,

#2 outsource your ADA sign projects. Invest tens of thousands of dollars to buy the equipment, the training and even hire new team members for an ADA Sign job bid that you may, or may not, win.

#3 outsource the ADA portion of your next sign projectContact another company to work with you on the ADA compliant signage portion of your project. (AKA: Outsource your ADA Signs)

We can see concerns with all of the options above:

 #1 outsourcing ada sign projects

Bowing out of the bidding process because of the ADA Signs, or turning down the client, isn’t going to allow your business to grow. If you turn down projects often enough, you may not be invited to bid in the future.

#2 outsource your ADA sign projects.

Investing tens of thousands of dollars to buy ADA Sign making equipment that you don’t have room for, may not be ready to buy, aren’t sure how to use and don’t yet have the staff to run? That option isn’t feasible and is probably not good business decision, just yet.

#3 outsource the ADA portion of your next sign project

Contact another company to work with you on the ADA compliant signage portion of your project? This sounds “ok”, but how does that look to your client? Do you really want the client to know that your company couldn’t complete the ADA compliant sign portion of the job without outside or outsourced help? Are all of your profits going to be gone the second you reach out to another company?

Choosing to outsource your ADA sign project is absolutely not an indication that your company “couldn’t complete the job” Quite the opposite.

Outsourcing your ADA sign project is a clear indication that your sign shop is resourceful and committed to fully serving your client’s needs. Choosing to outsource the ADA portion of your sign project also shows that you are determined to get the entire sign project done correctly, on budget and on time for your client.

Outsourcing an ADA Sign Project is exactly when and why you need ADA Signs Wholesale. We want you to succeed. We want to be your partner on this bid and on future bids. We want you to make a profit so that you will choose us again in the future. If your client has an excellent experience with you, you will need us again!

Let’s clear something up right away, at ADA Signs Wholesale, we understand exactly where you are coming from as a sign shop without all of the pricey ADA sign making equipment, space and training. Once upon a time, a few years ago, we were in the same boat. This is HOW we know exactly what matters to you when it comes to making a decision to outsource your ADA sign project.

Reach out to us today and let us show you how we can help you grow your sign business and keep your clients happy while taking on the larger jobs and continuing to profit.

Why Braille Signage is Required

Learn How ADA Signage Assists the Blind and the Visually Impaired
Braille Signage. An example of correct placement of an ADA Sign.

Braille signage is in all public places. We see it everywhere, we know there are laws requiring that ADA Signage that is posted, but do you ever think about why its there and why there are so many regulations surrounding the placement of ADA Compliant Braille Signs?

Here at ADA Signs Wholesale, we recently became aware of a video by YouTuber Tommy Edison called How Blind People Find Braille Signs

that we think does a great job of explaining how important Braille is to the blind. In fact,  How Blind People Find Braille Signs is not his only video. TommyEdisonXP has made many useful and interesting videos about what it’s like to live with blindness.

ADA Signs Wholesale Braille SignsOne thing we love about  How Blind People Find Braille Signs is that Mr. Edison explains why it’s so important to post signs in specific areas and at specific heights.

Imagine arriving at an appointment and not seeing a sign to let you know you’ve reached the correct office. Sighted people would “look” for a sign, right? The blind “feel” for a sign. If the sign isn’t Braille and it isn’t in the right place, how would they find the sign? It’s safe to assume that finding the sign would be difficult. Because of this very issue, being ADA compliant means having the correct sign, in the correct place and at the correct height from the floor. Because of this rule, the blind know to feel for the sign ADA Signs Wholesale Braille Restroom Signbetween 48 inches from the floor and 60 inches from the floor, on the right side of the door.ADA Signs Wholesale Directional Sign

  • …and too many other possibilities to list here!

There are numerous ADA sign possibilities and variations in any building, whether the building has 7 floors, 47 floors or only 1 floor. If you’re in charge of coordinating custom ADA compliant signs for an office building, hospital, school, church or any other kind of building, you should reach out to ADA Signs Wholesale today.

SignPro Systems Sign Photography Contest

SignPro Systems Sign Photography Contest

We love Signpro Framing Systems, and guess what!  Signs PDQ, the parent company of ADA Signs Wholesale, is pleased to announce that we won second place in their photography contest!

ADA SignPro System by ADA Signs Wholesale
SignPro Systems – ADA Slider Conference Room Signage.

Our ADA Sign photo entry in the contest was this photo showing two different conference room identification signs.

These curved frame metal signs feature ADA Compliant Braille lettering as well as sliders to give indication of whether a conference room is “in use” or “vacant”

Why use SignPro Systems?

There are numerous reasons to choose this sign framing system. Let’s take a look at the most obvious reasons to choose these sign frame systems.

Choices

The SignPro framing system offers many different styles, materials and features for their frame systems. No matter what look you want, we can find a perfect style for your building. Your choices are NOT limited.

Easy to Update

Updating signs that are part of a framing system is relatively simple. Just remove the insert on the front and add a new insert in its place.

We reccomend SignPro frames when a client is looking for something different and stylish. These frames are particularly helpful when the building manager knows that the common use of certain rooms could change down the road.  For instance, if a “Conference Room” may later be changed to a “Training Room”, a sign frame system is the perfect choice.

When a name change for a room is required, it’s an easy fix. Keep the current sign frame and simply switch out the removable insert on the front of the sign frame. The new sign frame insert can indicate the new name for the room. Later, if the training room again becomes a conference room, merely switch the sign again! Frame systems allows you to switch out sign inserts with ease.

SignPro Systems allow more customization for clients requests and are easy to produce and update. As always, ADA Signs Wholesale is fully prepared to be your ADA signage partner.
